VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

Основные возможности VirtualDub: конвертирование видео из одного формата в другой, захват видео, отдельная обработка видео и звукового потока, разделение AVI файлов на части, соединение AVI файлов, вырезание из AVI звука, изменение задержки звука и т.д.

Кроме того, VirtualDub позволяет уменьшать размеры видео файлов (качество при этом, естественно, теряется). Есть встроенный Motion-JPEG, MPEG-1 декодер, допускается преобразование MPEG-1 в 24-bit AVI и многое другое. Поддерживается работа с большими файлами (более 2 Gb).
В VirtualDub имеется мощный набор фильтров, таких как blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace и threshold. Такой набор неплох даже для графического редактора. Кроме этого, имеется возможность написания и подключения своих собственных фильтров.
