This program emulates the "Whip-It" puzzle, which was one of the myriad puzzles similar to the Rubik's Cube that was popularized in the 1980s.

Basically, "Whip-It" was a cylinder with different colored tiles on it, and one empty space. You are allowed to rotate its "tiers" left and right and to slide any of its tiles into and out of the empty space. The goal is to eventually line up the colors in each column such that each column only contains one individual color -- the puzzle is then considered solved (due to the fact that an empty space exists, one of the colors will have one less tile than all of the other colors).

Although the original "Whip-It" was a three-dimensional cylinder, this program emulates the puzzle in a two-dimensional fashion. When you play the game, you have to imagine that the grid that you see is wrapped around a cylinder.

To play the game, click the PLAY button that is located within the program's initial main dialog window.

The first dialog box that you will be presented with will allow you to set your options. You may define the size of the puzzle in rows and columns, and you can also specify whether you prefer to have sound effects. (Obviously, the larger you make the puzzle, the more difficult it will be to solve.)

After you configure the game, the program will then switch to full-screen mode. You will see the puzzle itself, or grid, in the middle of the screen.

The first thing you will probably want to do is mix the puzzle up so that you can begin to try to solve it. To do this, click the Scramble button that is located in the lower-left corner of the screen (or press Alt-S). Then wait patiently for a few moments while the colors are randomly rearranged (the length of time it takes will depend on how large the puzzle is).

Now you can begin solving the puzzle. To rotate one of the tiers either left or right, use your mouse to point to and click one of the arrows that you see on the screen which corresponds to the specific tier you want to shift. To move a tile either up or down into the empty space, again use your mouse, and click the actual tile (bear in mind that you can only slide a tile that is either directly above or below the vacant location).

You may also use your keyboard to manipulate the puzzle. To move a tile up or down into the empty space, press either the up-arrow key or the down-arrow key. To rotate a tier left or right, first press a number between 1 and 5; this number corresponds to the number of the tier that you want to shift, which will be indicated by the presence of a small pixel located both to the left and to the right of the grid (the row at the top is tier #1). Then press either the left-arrow key or the right-arrow key.

When you are done, or if you want to abort the game, click the Exit button located in the lower-right corner of the screen (or press Esc).

To close the program after that, click the QUIT button.
